Did you know that there is actually a sex slave price list that is being circulated by ISIS for captured women and children? Horrific, isn’t it?
According to United Nations official Zainab Bangura, who is a special envoy on sexual violence in conflict, on a trip to Iraq this past April she was given a copy of an Islamic State pamphlet, which included the list, showing that captured children as young as one fetch the highest price.
Bangura says she has verified that the document comes from Islamic State and reflects real transactions. In an interview she gave in New York, she stated that “girls get peddled like barrels of petrol.” According to her, a girl can be bought and sold by five or six different men and then sometimes the are then sold back to their own families for thousands of dollars of ransom.
In the price list that was circulated, women over 40 go for lowest price, at around $41, and the youngest children can go for $165. In a chart released by the United Nations Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Sexual Violence in Conflict, the prices for these sex slaves are approximately $40 for women ages 40-50, $60 for women 30-40, $80 for women 20-30, $124 for adolescents 10-20, and $165 for children, both boys and girls, from 1-9 years of age. (Note: these prices have been converted from Iraqi dinars to reflect US dollars.)
Initially the price list surfaced back in November of 2014, but, at the time, it could not be confirmed to be genuine. However, after Bangura spent time in the region she was able to confirm that it was, indeed, a genuine document.
These women and children are often captured Christians and Yazidis and the ISIS leaders are given first pick of them, after which they are put up for sale to foreign buyers, mostly wealthy men from other parts of the Middle East, for thousands of dollars. Finally they are offered to fighters for the lower prices shown on the “price list.”
These women and children aren’t treated as people they are treated as merchandise. In a translation of the document it says: “We have been informed that the market for sale of women had been witnessing a reduction in price which effects the needs for the Islamic State and the funding for the Mujahideen. For this, the commerce department had decided to set a fixed price regarding the sale of women. Therefore, all auctioneers are to abide by this and anyone who breaks the rules will be executed.”
A “fixed price” for the sale of human beings in 2015. Hard to believe, isn’t it? But, sadly human trafficking and sexual slavery is going on all around us, not just in the Middle East, but all over the world. Every place is touched by this horrific crime against humanity.
